A truly unique destination, Santa Fe is both the oldest and at 7,000 feet, the highest capital city in the United States. “The City Different” was founded by Spain in 1607, and briefly became part of Mexico before joining the United States in 1848. Nearly the entire city is built in the “Pueblo-Spanish” style, in which the houses were traditionally made with adobe clay bricks and flat roofs. The earthen colors of the buildings blend seamlessly into the surrounding hills and valleys.
Santa Fe’s location at the foot of the southern Rockies, and mild four-season climate (more than 300 days of sunshine annually), help make it a world-class city for outdoor recreation. Boasting several hundred miles of trails from 6,000-12,000 feet in elevation, the International Mountain Bike Association named Santa Fe one of 15 Silver Ride Centers. The nearby Pecos Wilderness offers nearly endless opportunities for hiking (including backpacking), fly-fishing, horseback-riding and back-country skiing. Ski Santa Fe operates 660 acres of lift-served terrain for downhill skiing from Thanksgiving to April.
New Mexico´s capital city is also its cultural and culinary hub. Canyon Road features the highest density of art galleries in the world, and the summer festival of the Santa Fe Opera is renowned globally. Many of the best restaurants in the Southwest are found here, including plenty of places to sample some of New Mexico’s famous red or green chile.
The 75 mile Long course, with 7,150 feet of climbing, will crown the winners after the almost 15 mile climb to the finish at Ski Santa Fe. At a peak elevation of 10,350 feet, this climb will be sure to get the heart pumping! Riders will transition from the plains and rolling hills of the grasslands and piñon-juniper woodland to the cottonwoods of the picturesque village of Tesuque. The long course finishes in the spruce, fir and aspen forest of the high mountains, with huge views of the Rio Grande valley nearly 5,000 feet below. Riders of the long course can choose either to ride the 15 miles downhill or take a shuttle back to the start. It is recommended to bring your climbing gears for this route, no grades are steeper than 12%, but the thin air will make it seem steeper!
LONG COURSE IS A COMPETITION: Only the finishers of the long course are eligible for category rankings and Overall and Podium awards. If you want to race and be ranked in your category, you must complete the long course. Top 10% of finishers in each age group earn a spot in the Qualifier Corral at every GFNY World event.
Riders of the 60 mile Medium course, with 3,500 feet of climbing, will travel a slightly shorter loop than the long course through the plains and rolling hills of the high desert. This course is perfect for the “rouleur” and finishes neatly back where it started in downtown Santa Fe.
MEDIUM COURSE IS NOT A COMPETITION: The riders of the medium course will be provided their start-to-finish time, but will not be ranked by finish time. All finish times will be listed in alphabetical order.
THE JERSEY: All riders receive the official GFNY Santa Fe race jersey, which is mandatory attire at the race. The jersey is designed in NYC and Made in Italy.
CHIP TIMING: GFNY Santa Fe is a timed race. Each athlete has their own timing chip, which starts right after you cross the start line and stops when you cross the finish line. Timing results will be available at gfny.cc/results.
FINISHER MEDAL: Every GFNY Santa Fe finisher receives a medal, no matter which distance they complete. All finishers also earn a “Finish” towards their 3x2020-2021 GFNY medal or the 10x medal. Go to gfny.com/medals for more information on GFNY’s multi-finisher medals.
